General Postgraduate Scholarships

UC offers a diverse range of scholarships to support students studying a postgraduate degree. Take a look at some of the postgraduate scholarships available for students studying in any discipline.

HOW TO APPLY

This is a summary list of many of the UC Scholarships that are available for students enrolled in a postgraduate* degree in any discipline at UC.

Each scholarship has different eligibility criteria so check the details of each one to find out if you're eligible.

These scholarships are subject to funding availability and are reviewed each year. TheUC Scholarships Office administers most of these scholarships. Please search ourfor all scholarships currently available.

Details:To fund postgraduate research students to deliver evidence that helps address complex challenges and informs longer-term investment decisions in injury prevention and sustained recovery, specifically in the context of injury compensation.NB: This is aScholarship.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $15,000per annum for 120 points of enrolment

Closing date:15 August

Details:Open to students and recent graduates of UC to write an essay on a subject involving an exposition of some passage chosen each year from literature having reference to social ideals.

Value:Financial assistance at a value of $1,000

Closing date:30 September

Details:Applicants must have been affected by a cancer experience, either directly or through a close relative. Applicants must be Aotearoa New سԹcitizens or holders of Aotearoa New سԹresidence class visas.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value ofNZ$5,000 for one year.

Closing date:31 October

Details:To support students who have completed the requirements to graduate with an MSc, BSc(Hons) or bachelor's degree from a New سԹuniversity and who intend to carry out research or postgraduate study at the سԹ.

Value:Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $3,000 for 120 points of enrolment.

Closing date:01 November

Details:Financial support for graduates of UC who have applied for admission, or are enrolled in a postgraduate programme in Information Systems at Victoria University of Wellington. Applications must be made by letter to the Information Studies Programme Director of Victoria University of Wellington by the closing date.

Value:The value of this scholarship is determined annually dependent on funds available but is up to $1,500 for one year

Details:Supports full-time students at UC who have a vision impairment.By the closing date for applications, an applicant must have registered with the University’s Te Ratonga Whaikaha | Equity & Disability Service as a student with a vision impairment

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value ofNZ$2,000 for one year.

Closing date:31 March

Details:Scholarships to assist students who demonstrate good citizenship and show leadership potential, who were experiencing financial difficulties during their period of university studies. Applicants must becitizens or permanent residents of Aotearoa New Zealand.NB: This scholarship is not administered by UC - contactfor further information.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $6,000 (students in their final year of an undergraduate degree) or $10,000 (postgraduate students); for one year.

Closing date:01 October

Details:To support female students at the سԹ to complete bachelor’s degrees, bachelor’s with honours degrees, and non-thesis postgraduate study. Two scholarships are available annually in the following categories: (a) for students who are enrolled mainly at 300 level (one scholarship); and (b) for students who are enrolled mainly at 400, 500, or 600 level (one scholarship). Applicants must be female and citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Value:Tuition fee support to a value of $4,500 for one year.

Closing date:31 March

Details:Applicants must be female and resident in one of UC's affiliated halls of residence in the year of tenure.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value ofNZ$2,500per 120 points of thesis enrolment; for one year.

Closing date:15 August

Details: For students studying in a Master's or doctoral programme with research on a topic related to ageing. Preference is given to those who are citizens of Aotearoa New سԹor holders of Aotearoa New سԹresidence class visas.

Value: Financial assistance to the value of $6,000 for one year.

Closing date: 31 October

Details:To support postgraduate diploma, honours, and master’s students whose study is facilitated through Kā Waimaero | Ngāi Tahu Centre at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | سԹ.

Value:(a) Financial assistance at a value of $16,000 (for students with whakapapa Ngāi Tahu) or $12,000 (open); and (b) tuition fees at the Aotearoa New سԹdomestic rate + SSL; for one year.

Closing date:31 October

Details:To support students with a vision impairment in undertaking study at UC. Applicants must have a vision impairment of 6/18 or less with both eyes and best possible correction, or less than 20 degrees of vision. By the closing date for applications, an applicant must have registered with the University’sEquity & Disability Serviceas a student with a vision impairment. Applicants must be New سԹcitizens or holders of New سԹresidence class visas.

Value:Financial assistance at a value of $10,000 for one year for a full-time student (the scholarship is paid pro-rata if a recipient is enrolled for fewer than 120 points).

Closing date:31 March

Details:Recognises excellence in English composition by current and recent undergraduate students of UC.Applicants must either: (a) be enrolled as undergraduate students at the University; or (b) have become eligible to graduate with an undergraduate degree from the University no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications.Applicants must submit an original piece of writing of their own sole composition, either unpublished or published, which deals imaginatively with any theme: an essay, a short story, a poem or group of poems, or a short play.

Value:First prize = $2,500; Second prize = $1,000; Third prize = $500.

Closing date:30 September

Details: To support female students for study towards a research master’s degree at the سԹ.

Value:Tuition fees at the domestic rate, to the points value of the qualifying master's project.

Closing date:31 October

Details: To support postgraduate students undertaking research on a topic related to aviation at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | سԹ.Suitable topics for the research include, but are not limited to: (a) Computational or experimental fluid mechanics; (b) High-performance materials or structures; or (c) Aircraft economics, operation, control, or communication systems.

Value: Financial assistance up to the value of $6,000 for up to 120 points.

Closing date: 01 November

Details: To recognise international students who were previously enrolled in a NCUK New سԹGlobal Education Pathway Masters Preparation Programme with high potential beginning their master’s studies at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | سԹ. Applicants must be Chinese citizens and may not be citizens of NZ or Australia; permanent residents of Australia; or holders of NZ residence class visas.

Value:Assistance with international fees to the value of $5,000 for one year.

Closing date: 30 November

Details:Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s degree by thesis or Doctoral degree programme at UC and must be Aotearoa New سԹcitizens.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value ofNZ$7,500for up to 120 points of enrolment.

Closing date:31 March

Details: For students studying towards a research master’s degree at UC (taught Master's are not eligible).

Value:$14,000 plus tuition fees (at domestic rate) for up to 120 points

Closing date: Not offered in 2024 or 2025

Details: To support students studying towards a Master's degree at UC who have a significant disability.

Value:$14,000 plus tuition fees (at domestic rate) for up to 240 points

Closing date:Not offered in 2024 or 2025

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value of up to NZ$1,000.

Details:The goal of theUC Research Student Publication Prizeis to encourage students to publish their work in leading peer-reviewed publications, indexed in Scopus, during their doctoral or master's studies (e.g., journal articles, book chapters, monographs, or conference proceedings). Publication during the tenure of Doctoral or Master's studies enhances student’s employment prospects and, for UC, contributes to the enhancement of international university rankings.

Closing date:Not offered in 2024 or 2025

Details:Applicants must be enrolled full-time in any year of a programme for a postgraduate degree or diploma.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value ofNZ$5,000 towards tuition fees (or if tuition fees are not payable by the recipient, the scholarship can be paid in two equal instalments), for one year.

Closing date:15 August

Details:Applicants must have completed at least one academic year at UC and who's earlier youth was spent substantially in Southland and whose parents, or guardian, are resident in Southland at the time of the award.

Value:The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value ofNZ$1,000per annum; for two years.

Closing date:31 March.

Details: To encourage postgraduate study and research, normally in New Zealand, in a field that in the opinion of the Scholarship Board is important to the social, cultural or economic development of New Zealand.Applicants must be Aotearoa New سԹcitizens or have residedin New سԹfor a period of at least five years immediately preceding the year of selection.NB: This is aScholarship.

Value: Financial assistance to the value of $20,000 per annum (Master's) and $30,000 per annum (PhD) for study in New Zealand; and up to $45,000 per annum for those studying overseas. Tenure is typically for up to three years.
