Tūhono Programme

21 September 2023

Tūhono is an extra-curricular programme that enables Te Kura Umanga | UC Business School students to connect across cultures on campus and develop cultural intelligence.

HOW TO APPLY

In te reo Māori, the kupu (word) ‘tūhono’ means to connect or join. Over the course of six meetings, the Tūhono programme connects students from a diverse range of nationalities and cultures. Not only is this a great opportunity to meet new people, but the programme is designed to help you develop your cultural intelligence (CQ).

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is a person's capability to function effectively in culturally diverse situations. Graduates today will inevitably work in culturally diverse organisations and teams. Cultural diversity is associated with increased opportunities for innovation and other benefits, but also greater potential for misunderstanding and associated challenges; therefore, it is essential that students develop the capability to function effectively in culturally diverse situations.

Student Story

"Tūhono is a great opportunity to not only meet people from different countries but is a great chance to learn more about different cultures. It’s one thing to learn about cultures from the internet, but it’s another to actually talk and engage with people in real life. Tūhono creates a casual environment to have open discussion about cultural differences and similarities. No matter what your career pathway is, in our globally connected world, it is important to be able to work with people from all countries effectively. Tūhono does not require a huge amount of time and is also a great opportunity to make lots of new friends."
