Starting study after a gap year

If you've taken a gap year, you’ll have some unique experiences to draw on during your studies. You might also find some things a bit more challenging. Check out UC's tips for starting study after a gap year.

HOW TO APPLY
  • “Make the most of the academic skills centre.”
  • “University is not like school, no-one is going to push you – you have to rely on yourself.”
  • “Give yourself time to connect with fellow students – everything evens out after a couple of months, but get involved in some clubs to make new connections.”
  • “Don't worry if you can't remember certain facts or equations from high school because most of this will be revised in your 100 level courses.”
  • “Go and talk to your lecturers – let them know you’ve had a break and they will be more than willing to give you some tricks.”
  • “Say yes to opportunities such as internships as they can create such cool memories – even though they might seem scary.”
  • “Go to class. Invest in study time. Ask for feedback. Reflect.”
  • “You probably have a whole new perspective on things after your gap year, so may view what you learn in lectures differently than other students – that’s OK!”
