Introduction

Fine Arts studies explores visual arts as an emotional and thought-provoking media that has influenced us throughout history.

UC's Bachelor of Fine Arts offers you the opportunity to study at the first art school in Aotearoa, and one of the oldest in the English-speaking world.

Fine Arts

What will my study involve?

  • Improve on your personal art style, learn artistic technique, and find opportunities to create, collaborate, and display your body of work.
  • From your second year, choose your studio specialisation: Moving Image, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, or Sculpture.
  • Access an on-campus art gallery, personal studio spaces, workshops and art labs, and external gallery and art studio visits.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

UC offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts , which includes introductory courses in studio practice and technique, the professional arts industry, and allows you to focus your degree on one studio subject.

After the first year, you will specialise in one of the following studio subjects:

You will choose your studio subject on the basis of your experience and grades gained from the first year. Most students are able to gain places in one of their top two studio options.

The following years of the degree also allows elective courses from Bachelor of Arts subjects. Some students choose to build on the Art History and Theory courses taken in first year, and others choose to pursue a variety of courses, such as in languages, business, and more to gain the broadest possible education to supplement their practical education in Fine Arts and design.

You experiences in studio practice, tools and techniques, community projects, and connections with the professional arts industry gives you many potential pathways in the expanding art world, whether it be as a creator, critic, manager, or researcher of art.

Career pathways could include:

  • professional artist
  • product designer
  • art historian
  • advertising consultant.
