UC's Bachelor of Laws degree is internationally recognised. This four-year degree includes compulsory courses to provide a solid background in core legal knowledge and skills, before you focus on specific areas of law or study it more broadly.
Our courses are taught by staff who are regarded as leading experts in their fields - many having written the textbooks that underpin legal studies in New Zealand.
The third and fourth year of the LLB is made up of courses you can choose in a broad range of law topics to help you define your expertise or future legal profession as a lawyer.
These can include:
- Human rights law
- Media and copyright law
- Property law
- Family law
- Medical law.
Many Law students also choose to complete a second degree alongside their LLB. Double degrees give you the opportunity to study other fields of interest and combine your expertise with legal skills. The minimum timeframe for completion of a double degree is five years of full-time study.
Common double degree choices with the LLB are:
- Bachelor of Criminal Justice
- Bachelor of Commerce
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Science

If you achieve well in your first two years of the LLB, you may be invited to complete the Bachelor of Laws with Honours.
This prestigious degree includes three additional courses in your final year to develop advanced research skills and to complete your own research dissertation.
The LLB(Hons) is particularly good preparation for building an academic research career or for postgraduate studies in Law.
UC Law graduates are seen as well-rounded and highly competent, skilled in critical thinking and legal analysis. They secure jobs not only as lawyers but as judges clerks, governmental policy analysts, and in leadership positions in the business community.
