MBA Study Tour to Japan

13 -17 October, with pre-departure activities in September 2025

This one-week study tourinvolves a series of industry visits and meetings in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan.

Programme Information

International expansion provides a key opportunity for firms to grow but it is a process that can be fraught with challenges, especially those associated with adapting to a new environment.

Focussing on Japan, you will explore the cultural differences that may require adaptation at an individual level, utilising the cultural intelligence framework as a tool to identify and develop strategies for navigating these. In addition, you will examine management control systems as an area that can require organisational adjustments, undertaking a project reviewing the management control systems of a client in the New Zealand-Japan context.

While the study tour component is one-week long, the course also consists of workshops, activities and assessment items beforehand and afterwards.

During the study tour, you will be based in Tokyo, with a day trip to Kyoto also planned.

  • Travel expenses

You are responsible for all your own travel expenses, including:

  • Airfares: must arrive in Tokyo on or before 12 October and leave on or after 18 October
  • Accommodation: single rooms have been reserved at the lyf Ginza Tokyo from 12-18 October at JPY22,875 (approx. NZD265) per night including breakfast and accommodation tax or you can choose to find your own hotel nearby.
  • Visa costs: New سԹpassport holders do not need a visa to enter Japan for stays of 90 days or less, but you may need one if your passport is from another country or you plan to visit other countries.
  • Travel insurance: you will be covered under the university’s insurance policy for the duration of the programme free of charge, but you will need to pay for this if you have more than two days of leisure travel before or after the tour or need additional coverage.
  • Food: you will stay in the Tokyo Station area where there is a range of food options
  • Local transport: the day trip to Kyoto will be by train, while you will travel to most meetings and visits on the subway. You will also need to budget for airport transfers.
  • Any personal expenses during or outside the programme

By approval of the MBA Director. Normally, students would be at least one year into the MBA programme with at least a B+ GPA at the end of Term 3 2024. Selections will be made based on GPA and personal statement.
