Studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and a Bachelor of Laws
With aspirations set on becoming both a Chartered Accountant and a Practicing Solicitor, combined with a desire of one day visiting New Zealand, Hannah jumped at the opportunity to undertake her studies at UC.
"I have relatives in New Zealand, and always heard of how beautiful the country is, so it had always been a dream for me to come round to this part of the world. When the opportunity came to actually spend my university years here, I certainly did not hesitate!"
The chance to study in a new country opened doors and Hannahs mind to taking subjects that she had not studied during her high school years in Malaysia.
"During my foundation year I decided it was an opportunity to try out something different, so I took an Accounting paper, and my decision to add on an Accounting degree took off from there."
However, the decision to study Law was always something that Hannah felt would be a path she was interested in going down, and she enjoys the balance that taking two contrasting subjects brings her.
"I love how they are so intertwined yet so distinct. When I get tired from reading, I can just go and play with some numbers, doing very different things yet still studying. And then the wordy part of Accounting isnt so wordy to me because Law has trained me well. Its great!"
Despite the heavy workload of a double degree, Hannah strives to keep a healthy balance between study and life outside of university, as well as finding new hobbies and exploring some of her new environment.
"I usually spend my days preparing for upcoming assignments and tests, but have a cut off time of 6pm to catch up on life, and also clock in on my sleep!"
"I love discovering the city centre as it is always changing due to the rebuild, as well as tramping parts of the Port Hills and Cashmere Hills. Road tripping around the South Island is definitely a highlight during weekends and term breaks. I have also found a recent interest in landscape photography its not hard to take awesome shots as NZs landscape is so photogenic."
Another significant part of Hannahs UC experience has been her involvement in various clubs that keep her connected to both her home country, as well as being an opportunity to have some fun and meet new people.
"I am actively involved in the Canterbury Malaysian Students Association the drama production they put on every year has been a highlight!"
Hannah is enthusiastic about her time at UC so far and looks forward to the years to come.
"The honest truth is, the decision to study at UC was the best decision that I have ever made. I am grateful to be able to study in such an environment where everyone is so helpful and supportive, and I can definitely say that my university experience here has been a very happy one."
