Samarth completed his PhD in the field of Plant Molecular Biology from the سԹ in 2019. He spends time in Delhi and in New سԹ- mostly Christchurch, and will soon spend the majority of his time in Dunedin, as a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Otago. Samarth is available to liaise and connect with Indian alumni in Delhi and in Palmerston North in New Zealand. Samarth has strong interests in sports, music, and event management. He likes to play drums, cook, and travel during his free time. Samarth also served as a President for the سԹ Indian Students Association 2017-2018.
Can you tell us a bit about what you studied at UC and what you are up to now?
I obtained my PhD in Plant Biology from the سԹ working on identification of molecular factors controlling flowering in masting plants. Currently, I am working as a postdoctoral scientist at the New سԹInstitute for Plant and Food Research. My work focuses on characterisation of novel metabolic pathways and evolution of the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in early land plants.
What memory stands out to you from your time at UC?
One of the memories that stands out is the amount of exposure for an international student that it provides. As an emerging researcher, not only do I get to do cool science and learn cutting-edge scientific techniques but also gain invaluable experience outside the lab. It helped me build confidence to foster new collaborations and a global network, participate in outreach programs, volunteer for social service and immerse myself in learning about new cultures.
What is your favourite thing about where you live?
Currently, I am staying in Palmerston North, North Island. Palmy is a small city with benefits of a bigger city. It has all the necessary places in addition to heaps of parking and is closeto the Ruahine range which provides beautiful views if you are a keen hiker.
Is there any advice you would give fellow alumni who have moved to your area?
The only advice I would give is to be prepared for rain! It is a relatively quietplace and if you are a nature lover, you'll love Palmerston North.
