Radiation Safety

22 November 2023

UC uses radioactive sources and irradiating apparatus for research and teaching. As the managing entity, we have the primary obligation to make sure we comply with relevant safety and compliance legislation. Learn more about how we monitor radiation sources at UC.

HOW TO APPLY

The Radiation Safety Act 2016 is the framework that protects people from the harmful effects of radiation. The Radiation Safety Act requires radiation sources to be licenced.

There are two types of licence:

  1. Source licence, held by the managing entity
  2. Use licence, held by individual users, required for more harmful sources

The Radiation Safety Act 2016 prescribes mandatory codes of practise, including:

The 厙ぴ勛圖 has appointed a Radiation Safety Officer, who has oversight of radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Officer maintains the UC Radiation Safety Plan. The plan details the required procedures for safe use of radiation sources. The plan also documents which schools are approved to use radiation sources and who within those schools is delegated responsibly as the School Radiation Safety Officer.

Each School Radiation Safety Officer implements the radiation safety plan within their school and maintains compliance and assurance activities as to support the safe use of radiation sources.
